Objective

The MADisWATER project aims to create and develop a public-private innovation hub dedicated to the research and development of advanced technologies, processes and management tools to address the issue of water resource availability in the Community of Madrid (Figure 1). The main purpose of this project is to minimise the water footprint of various current and future water-consuming activities through the regeneration of industrial and urban water, providing innovative solutions that enable the sustainability of the entire water cycle, as well as increasing water resources in the urban and industrial water cycle. The project will be carried out by applying innovation in sustainability and digitalisation technologies, creating a unique public-private working group in the Community of Madrid that will enable a disruptive ecosystem at both the community and national levels.

General activities

• Develop and validate decentralised urban water purification and regeneration technologies for reuse in different applications.
• Develop and validate industrial water purification and regeneration technologies for reuse in different industrial applications, as well as technologies to reduce water consumption requirements for industry.
• Develop and validate digitisation, security and smart control systems based on sensors capable of continuously monitoring and optimising treatment processes in real time.
• Develop and validate strategic and financial collaborative mechanisms to align the interests of the various players in the sector and seek solutions in line with the problems identified and the needs of those players.

Expected results

This innovation hub aims to research and develop advanced technologies that improve the quality of wastewater and enable its reincorporation into the water cycle, thus addressing the need for technological solutions that promote efficient and sustainable water use. This approach will not only contribute to closing the water cycle in the Community of Madrid, but will also promote a circular economy, aligning with environmental sustainability objectives and improving the region’s resilience to future challenges.

With all of the above, MADISWATER is geared towards sustainability, circularity, digitalisation and efficiency in water use in the Community of Madrid. Through research and development of new technologies, it is hoped to facilitate the reintroduction of water into its integral cycle, minimising environmental impact and improving the quality of life in the Community of Madrid.
