Principal investigator of the Bioe Group, his scientific activity focuses on environmental biotechnology; specifically, the use of electromicrobiology for the bioremediation of water (urban and industrial) and natural environments, as well as the detection of pollutants.

After postdoctoral stays at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (USA) and the Centre for Astrobiology (INTA/CSIC, Madrid), he joined the University of Alcalá in 2009 through the Ramón y Cajal program. Since 2013, he has been a Full Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Currently, he is a visiting professor at Xi’an University of Technology (XUT), China.

He has supervised 20 doctoral theses, with 10 more underway , and over 20 master’s theses. He is also the author of more than 100 scientific publications, 13 book chapters, and seven national and international patents. He has participated in and coordinated above 30 national and European projects, including iMETland (awarded by Madri+d), ELECTRA (EU-China Flagship), and ATTRACT, all part of the Horizon 2020 program.

His technology transfer activities are notable for the creation of METfilter, a spinoff company from IMDEA Water. METland® solution was chosen as one of the top three in the field of biotechnology in Europe in 2020. In 2016 and 2020, he received the First Prize from the International Campus of Excellence for Smart Energy for various projects. In 2021, he was awarded the Innovation Prize by the International Society for Microbial Electrochemistry and Technology (ISMET. He is part of the National Plan for the Recruitment of High-Level Foreign Experts, funded by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.
