Carlos Mario Gómez, associated researcher at IMDEA Water, Director of the Department of Economics at the University of Alcalá (UAH), and professor at the same institution, has been awarded the 21st University–Society Knowledge Transfer Award granted by the UAH Social Council in the Humanities and Social and Legal Sciences category for his work titled “La materialidad financiera del impacto del cambio climático en el agua: selección de estudios y recomendaciones para el regulador y el sector bancario español.”

The study examines how the effects of climate change on water resources can translate into financial risks for the economy and provides recommendations to help regulators and financial institutions incorporate water-related risks into their decision-making processes and climate adaptation strategies.

This is the third time that Carlos Mario Gómez has received this distinction. He was previously awarded in 2013 for his work “Results of Professional Activity as a Specialist in Water Economics” and in 2020, as Director of the Environmental Economics Research Group, for the “Creation and Development of the Water Economics Forum.”

Gómez holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Alcalá, a Master’s degree from the University of London, and a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia). He has served as an associate researcher and visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Oxford. Since 2000, he has led numerous national and international research projects, including initiatives funded under the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) and Horizon 2020, and has provided consultancy services on water economics and integrated water management for the Government of Spain, the European Commission, and the United Nations. At IMDEA Water, he is the principal investigator of WAVE (Water, Environment and Economics) group.

The award ceremony will take place during the Solemn Opening Ceremony of the Academic Year at the University of Alcalá next September.
