The 24th Life Cycle Analysis Symposium (LCA) of the Society of Toxicology and Environmental Chemistry (SETAC) took place in Vienna, Austria on September 24 and 26. Jorge Senán, member of the membrane technology group of IMDEA Water, attended the symposium presenting his work entitled "Challenges in the application of the life cycle in the research of innovative recycling systems. From Reverse Osmosis to Forward Osmosis" in the first session of Circular Economy. The work was carried out in collaboration with the Complutense University of Madrid within the INREMEM project (Innovation in Membrane Recycling, CTM2015-65348-C2-1-R). The objective of the project is to approach the membrane technology towards the Circular Economy through direct recycling and open loop systems.

Within the work, the speaker presented the importance of the application of the methodology of life cycle analysis in the transition towards the Circular Economy and within the Waste Framework Directive (2008/98/CE). In addition, he showed several methodological challenges with the l case study of recycling to Forward Osmosis demonstrating the need to involve commercial producers in the application of the methodology in their processes and economic transition.
