Dr Irene de Bustamante: “Only with a solid scientific basis can we develop effective policies to protect water resources”
The IMDEA Water Institute participated in the seminar PFAS and other emerging contaminants: a new challenge in the water sector, held on October 9 at the Botín Foundation. The meeting brought together specialists from the scientific, technical, and regulatory fields to discuss the challenges posed by emerging contaminants—including perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)—in sustainable water management.
During her speech, IMDEA Water Director Dr Irene de Bustamante highlighted the importance of research as a basis for informed decision-making in environmental policies: “Research must provide clear evidence to improve measures and guide regulation. Only with a solid scientific basis can we develop effective and sustainable policies to protect water resources.”
Dr De Bustamante emphasized the need to strengthen collaboration between academia, urban water cycle operators, and public administrations. This work is essential for anticipating risks, promoting innovative treatment technologies, and consolidating a regulatory framework adapted to new environmental challenges.
The seminar served as a space for exchanging scientific and technological advances in the detection and elimination of PFAS and other emerging contaminants, reflecting the sector’s commitment to safer, more resilient, and knowledge-based water management.
During the meeting, representatives from government agencies, operators, universities, and research centres addressed issues such as the technical and regulatory complexity of treating these contaminants, advances in national and international water legislation, available elimination technologies, and the costs associated with treating drinking water.
With its participation, IMDEA Water reaffirms its commitment to generating excellent scientific knowledge, aimed at offering practical and sustainable solutions that contribute to the protection and responsible management of water resources.
