Green filters: A different way of wastewater treatment. From waste to resource

Second activity of IMDEA Water in the Science Week 2016

On the occasion of the 16th Science Week, the activity “Green filters: A different way of wastewater treatment. From waste to resource” was held in IMDEA Water on November 10.

Members of Hydrogeology and Reuse group organized and developed this activity, in which 45 participants visited IMDEA Water’facilities to get first-hand knowledge of the characteristics and utilities of wastewater treatment through Green Filters.

The activity was developed in two parts, the first one was a theoretical part and the second was practical. The participants received basic notions of urban wastewater treatment through conventional systems and through extensive or non-conventional systems; in particular, through the processes of elimination of pollutants by Green Filters.

In the practical part of the activity, a simulation of pollutants transport in an aquifer was developed. In addition, attendees visited the Green Filters installed in the experimental plot of the institute, where, after knowing the operation scheme of the wastewater purification system installed, they were able to carry out the measurement of piezometric levels, groundwater sampling and elemental analysis (pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen and temperature) of the previously sampled water.
