Groundwater management and protection is an old issue that becomes more and more a prerequisite with the exponentially increase of water demands all over the world.

For an appropriate assessment of groundwater ecosystem health a reliable classification of subsurface ecoregions is required. In an essay published in the prestigious scientific journal Nature (2012) a new regionalization of groundwater (stygoregions) in Germany is proposed by Institute for the Environmental Sciences and the University of Koblenz-Landau (Germany). The classification is a step further for the evaluation of groundwater environmental status and to ecological oriented-management of the groundwater.
