IMDEA Agua participates in the Science and Innovation Week with six outreach activities
From November 3 to 16, 2025, the Community of Madrid is celebrating a new edition of the Science and Innovation Week of Madrid, one of the most important scientific outreach events in Spain, coordinated by the Fundación madri+d.
The IMDEA Water Institute once again joins this initiative with six free activities designed to bring research on water, microorganisms and emerging contaminants closer to students and the general public. Workshops, demonstrations and guided visits will allow one to see first-hand how the institute’s scientists work and why their work is key for sustainable development.
Among this year’s proposals are the visit to the Center of Excellence and Research in Sustainable Urban Drainage Techniques of Canal de Isabel II, a unique opportunity to discover a rainfall simulator pioneering in Europe; the workshop “Exploring the microbial diversity of water: from invisibility to obtaining its DNA” which will allow immersion into the fascinating world of aquatic microorganisms; and “Exploring membranes and microcontaminants: science and sustainability” centered on water treatment technologies and current environmental challenges.
Other highlighted activities are “Electroactive bacteria to monitor water quality in remote environments” where it will be shown how microorganisms can act as biological sensors; “Beyond the visible: contaminants of emerging concern” which invites reflection on the presence of microplastics and pharmaceuticals in water; and “Do you know the bacteria in your garden?”, a practical experience to learn how to isolate and analyze bacteria present in irrigation water, soils and crops.
With this programming, IMDEA Water seeks to bring science closer to society, foster scientific vocations among the youngest, and raise awareness about the importance of research in sustainable water management.
