Jéssica Andrade Vilas Boas tells us about her internship at IMDEA Water

PhD student

Jéssica Andrade is a PhD student in the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (Brazil). During the period from August to December of 2019 she has been developing her research within Ecotoxicology Group at IMDEA Water Institute.

  1. What does your job consist of?

The purpose of my work was to evaluate the effect of multiple stressors on the planktonic community. The study will be incorporated into my Ph.D. thesis. In the last three years, I have been working with ecotoxicology and different types of model organisms, including ciliates.

2. Why did you choose IMDEA Water for an internship?

I found Andreu Rico (my supervisor) at Researchgate and contacted him. He told me that the IMDEA Water has an excellent structure and highly qualified researchers.

3. How this internship helps you to advance in your research?

The internship allowed me to learn new tools and ways to conduct science in the field of ecotoxicology from the preparation of an experiment to the data analysis and their interpretation. Those new skills that I acquired have been incorporated into my research during my time in IMDEA and this new valuable knowledge will be harnessed in the next steps of my research. Moreover, it was a good opportunity being part of an international research group where each member was essential to the success of the project. This experience helped me to develop further professional and also personal skills.
