The local government shows its interest in metlandâ technology for wastewater treatment

The mayor of Alcalá de Henares, Javier Rodríguez Palacios, accompanied by other members of the city government, visited the IMDEA Agua facilities on Thursday. The aim of the conference was to explore the possibilities of metland® –a technology developed by METfilter, and its applications in smart wastewater treatment.

Researcher Abraham Esteve Núñez, Scientific Director of Metfilter, gave a talk in which he explained the origin and operation of metland®, based on microbial electrochemistry, for the smart treatment of wastewater. Rodríguez Palacios, accompanied by Alberto Blázquez Sánchez, First Deputy Mayor and Councilor for Sustainable Urban Development, and Enrique Nogués Julián, Councilor for the Environment, showed great interest in the application of this technology in the urban environment.
 
Together with Eloy García Calvo and Irene de Bustamante, director and deputy director of IMDEA Agua, they toured the facilities and visited the metland® unit that cleans the institute's wastewater. This device allows the treatment of urban wastewater for small populations or isolated communities with a zero cost in energy while obtaining water free of pathogens appropriate for irrigation.

The technology developed by Metfilter proves that urban wastewater can be sustainable cleaned-up with no energy cost by using bacteria able to generate electricity from the pollutant present in the water. The high efficiency of the system allows to reduce the surface requirement for implementation to offer an attractive solution for small communities where the decentralised system is desired. The new system is able to enhance the efficiency of the treatment without missing landing beautification by using plants.
