Bulletin No. 3: LIFE + TRANSFOMEM available. This newsletter is part of the dissemination activities of LIFE TRANSFOMEM project. In the bulletin you can find basic information about the Project, news, publications and information about the activities carried out during the period between December 2015 to June 2016.
TRANSFOMEM is an european project funded by the LIFE+ instrument. The project is related to “Transformation of disposed reverse osmosis membranes into recycled ultrafiltration and nanofiltration membranes”.
The project objective is to increase sustainability of membrane-based water treatment processes, by improving their durability and reducing the environmental costs associated to this technology. As a result, the obtained processed water will comply Royal Decree 1620/2007 about reuse of waste water, by means of reusing recycled membranes for whichever purpose allowed by the Royal Decree. This will be achieved through an environmentally-friendly recycling process of the waste membranes disposed by the reverse osmosis desalination plants, and then using the recycled membranes in lower pressure filtration processes. Such recycled membranes, having a remarkably increased permeability, will be demonstrated in the project in two direct applications: pre-treatment process before reverse osmosis step, and wastewater tertiary treatment, so that such applications of recycled membranes will guarantee the required water quality needed for water reuse.
The project started on June 2014 and currently in its pilot stage. This project is being developed by IMDEA Water Institute and the companies SADYT and Valoriza Agua.
