Dr. Junkal Landaburu Aguirre obtained the degree of M.Sc (Chemistry) in 2004 from the University of Basque Country, Spain. She started her PhD studies in 2006 in the Environmental and Chemical Engineering group of the University of Oulu, Finland, from where she got her doctoral degree in 2012. Her PhD thesis was focused on the removal of heavy metals from phosphorous rich wastewaters using membrane technology (Micellar-Enhanced Ultrafiltration).

She has participated in 18 national and international projects, being most of the projects focused on industrial wastewater treatment with a wide international and industrial collaboration. She has 24 scientific articles (h index 13), 1 book chapter, 1 patent and 30 communications in international conferences.

She joined IMDEA Water in January 2015 with a Marie Curie AMAROUT II fellowship. Currently she is focused in the implementation of membrane technology (membrane bioreactors and pressure driven membranes) for wastewater treatment, desalination and preconcentration and removal of emerging compounds such as micronanoplastics. In addition, she is also involved in the research line focused on membrane recycling and Life Cycle Assessment.
