Success of the interactive virtual visit of IMDEA Water Institute at the European Researchers’ Night in Madrid

The virtual platform is still active

The IMDEA Water Institute participated in the latest edition of the European Researchers' Night in Madrid, held on November 27 and 28, receiving more than 1,000 visits.

On this occasion, attendees were able to enter the Institute through an interactive virtual tour, which is still available HERE, and tour some of our laboratories and pilot plants, while meeting our researchers and discovering what their work consists of. through videos, question and answer games, images, chats, etc.

Through this virtual visit it was shown how urban wastewater can be treated in a sustainable way through an electrogenic wetland (METland) and, on the other hand, how the water is purified and decontaminated, what are the pollutants that we cannot see and what waste is generated in some water treatment processes.

The world of aquatic ecology and ecotoxicology was also approached to the public, since it was shown how our habits and the chemicals we use affect the living beings of our rivers and lakes.

In addition, the concepts of water consumption and the generation of pollutants in our homes, their transfer to the environment and the natural attenuation processes to which they are subjected were approached to the public. For this, a pilot installation was shown so that attendees could see how researchers study a new way of purifying water based on nature.

The participants were also able to discover how a water sample is taken, and what happens to it when it enters the laboratory, from physical-chemical to microbiological analyzes. In addition, a model showed how the transport of pollutants through the soil occurs, and their subsequent analysis.
