Álvaro Pun García holds a PhD in Hydrology and Water Resources Management from the Universidad de Alcalá (2023), a Master’s degree in Agroforestry Biotechnology (2013) and a degree in Agricultural Engineering (2008) from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.

Following graduation, he worked in the engineering sector, contributing to projects involving industrial documentation, 3D technical drawing, aircraft component adjustment, modifications to automotive assembly lines and logistics management. He subsequently redirected his career towards research through his postgraduate studies in Agroforestry Biotechnology. In 2014, he joined the Bioe research group at the University of Alcalá, led by Dr Abraham Esteve-Núñez, where he later carried out his doctoral research. During this period, he participated in the REMTAVARES programme of the Comunidad de Madrid and contributed to science outreach activities aimed at the general public.

His research activity has focused on water treatment, with particular emphasis on bioelectrochemical systems. Within this field, his work has focused on the application of fluidised and fixed-bed systems, as well as on studying the effects of these technologies on emerging contaminants and their environmental implications.

His expertise includes warehouse logistics management, microbiological techniques, water analysis and bioelectrochemical processes, hydraulic design, nutrient flows in soil and plants, and sustainable wastewater treatment.

From 1 September 2026, he is employed as an advanced research support technician on MADisWATER Project ‘Madrid is water: Vital technologies for water sustainability in Madrid’, file number 59/323466.9/25, funded by the Community of Madrid and co-funded by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund within the ERDF Operational Programme of the Community of Madrid for the period 2021-2027, within the framework of the call for 2025 for grants to contribute to the improvement of public-private cooperation in R&D&I through consortium projects with a knock-on effect.
