Results of the MIDES project

IMDEA Water presented the latest advances in microbial desalination in the fifteenth edition of the 15th   IWA Leading Edge Conference on Water and Wastewater Technologies, held from May 24 to 31 in Nanjing, China. The results are the outcome of the research carried out by the consortium within the H2020 MIDES project.

The researcher Juan Manuel Ortiz showed the conclusions in two communications entitled Anaerobic Wastewater Pretreatment As Fuel Production Stage For Microbial Desalination Cells and Microbial Desalination Cell For Brackish Water Desalination Powered By Energy Contained In Wastewater.

The IWA LET conference is reference point in the field of new water treatment technologies. During the congress many attendees showed great interest in the research supported by IMDEA Water. The conference worked to exchange ideas and points of view on the future of water technologies, the efficiency of the purification processes, the challenges related to climate change, and the sanitation challenge in developing countries.

About the project

The MIDES project aims to revolutionize desalination by developing a sustainable process of producing drinking water from seawater with low energy consumption. This advanced technology will be exploited internationally to meet the growing need for water resources essential for environmental, economic and social development. MIDES will have test facilities in Europe, North Africa and South America.

The consortium, coordinated by Fcc aqualia, consists of 12 companies and research centers in eight countries. MIDES is funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation program under grant agreement N. 685793.
