Soil and Water Quality in the Environment, a research group of the IMDEA Water Institute and the University of Alcalá, wants to share the launch of its new website. Here, you can find information about the team, their research and the dissemination activities.

It is a multidisciplinary research group led by Irene de Bustamante Gutiérrez and composed of the researchers Raffaella Meffe – Contaminant transport (PhD. in Hydrogeology), Virtudes Martínez Hernández – Water Quality (PhD. in Hydrology and Water Resources Management), Ana de Santiago Martín – Soil Contamination (PhD. in Pharmacy), David Mostaza Colado – Irrigation and Remote Sensing (MSc. in Hydrology and Water Resources Management), Jorge Hernández Martín – Hydrogeology (Postgraduate in Groundwater Hydrology), Guillermo Vaquero Quintana – Geology (MSc. in Mining Engineering) and Gloria Teijón Ávila – Hydrogeochemistry (MSc. in Groundwater Hydrology).

 

Soil and Water Quality in the Environmen

The main goal of Soil and Water Quality in the Environment is the INTEGRAL MANAGEMENT OF WATER RESOURCES through 4 focus areas:

1. TREATMENT AND WATER REUSE: using non-conventional technologies based on natural attenuation processes (Nature-based treatments, such as Land Application Systems) and the revalorisation of waste. Within the group, the Team in Vegetation Filters (FILVER) works specifically on the design and monitoring of vegetation filters (a type of Land Application Systems). Part of the wastewater produced in IMDEA Water is treated by a Vegetation Filter (pilot scale). Do you want to know more about it? Do not hesitate to contact us.

2. HYDROGEOLOGY: evaluation of water resources in terms of quantity and quality through hydrogeological studies based on the application of multiple tools (numerical, hydrochemical and hydrogeochemical models).

3. CONTAMINANT ASSESSMENT: studies of the transfer and interaction between chemical substances (mainly nutrients, metals and emerging contaminants) in multiple contamination scenarios developing specifically designed experiments and reactive transport models.

4. BIOLOGICAL RECEPTORS: evaluation of the bioavailability of contaminants in soils by the use of bioindicators and the study of their transfer into the food chain through crop consumption.

 

Soil and Water Quality in the Environment is committed to scientific dissemination. For this reason, they participate in numerous activities in the context of different dissemination events. Indeed, you can find us during the Researchers’ Night or the Science Week. They also participate in workshops or giving talks on commemoration days such as the World Water Day, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science or the World Soil Day. Finally, they frequently organize numerous meetings in our institute to share their research and let people/collectives know their pilot facilities.
