Water Night in Alcalá de Henares: a unique opportunity to learn about the work of researchers

European Researchers' Night

On September 29th we will celebrate at IMDEA Agua the
European Researchers’ Night in Madrid
an event that is being held simultaneously in more than 350 European cities. We are waiting for you at the Water Night in Alcalá de Henares.

At our booths you will learn how we can treat urban wastewater in a sustainable way using electroactive microorganisms. You will also discover how a microorganism is isolated from the environment and how we can determine if that microorganism is resistant to different antibiotics. In addition, you will understand what ecotoxicology is and how pollutants in the environment affect aquatic life, while we will have aquariums and digital microscopes to show some of the invertebrates and plants that we use in our tests and that are used as biological indicators of water quality in rivers and lakes.

On the other hand, our researchers will tell you about the environmental problems that some pollutants found in water are creating, and you will also learn what membranes are and how they are recycled at the end of their useful life.

You will also learn how much water we consume, how we generate pollutants in our homes, how these can reach the environment and the food chain, and what nature-based water treatment solutions are all about.

You will also be able to attend two workshops. In the first one, our researchers and technicians will show you how contaminants are transported through water/soil, how they are extracted and how they are detected in water, soil and plant samples. In the second workshop you will learn about a very important molecular technique as a first step to know the microbial diversity living in water: “DNA extraction”.

All activities of the Water Night in Alcalá de Henares are aimed at the general public and will take place on September 29, 2023 at IMDEA Agua, located at Avenida Punto Com nº2 in Alcalá de Henares, between 6 pm and 9 pm. Details of each activity are provided below:
