The objective is to show its application to wastewater treatment

Workshop Electricity producing bacteria: an old and new form of energy inaugurated yesterday the activities of the Science Week in IMDEA Water. Organised by Bioe Group, the proposal aims to understand the microbial electrochemistry and its application to wastewater treatments.

Over the course of two and a half hours, students from the IES Carmen Conde (Las Rozas, Madrid) have learned first-hand what sewage is, how it is measured and how it is treated. After an introductory talk, and through various practical experiences, they have gained knowledge about the primary role played by microbial communities and their interaction with electroconductive materials, the origin of microbial electrochemical technologies (MET), and their different applications.

Likewise, the students have visited the METland (electrogenic wetland) located in the research centre and check in situ how a wastewater treatment based on MET works.

The Madrid Science Week is an event of scientific dissemination and citizen participation organised by the madri+d Foundation, which offers the public the opportunity to learn about the work of scientists, their research, motivations and the latest advances in the field.
